Fred Kaplan does a very good job explaining the significance of the vote not to produce additional F-22s. The program had continued, at the cost of billions of dollars because a lot of people’s livelihoods in a lot of different states are tied up in it. However, if we’re going to have a make-work program, we should try to get something useful out of it. Though the F-22 stealth fighter plane is awesome, it is unlikely that we’ll ever have occasion to use them. And if we do have occasion, we have 187 of them already.
