Donald Rumsfeld, one of the least competent members of the Bush administration, fired some shots at Obama today regarding the president’s claim last night that “Commanders in Afghanistan repeatedly asked for support to deal with the reemergence of the Taliban, but these reinforcements did not arrive.”
I am not aware of a single request of that nature between 2001 and 2006. If any such requests occurred, ‘repeated’ or not, the White House should promptly make them public.
He even went so far as to request a Congressional review of the claim, saying something about troops and disservices and sacrifices or some such bullshit that he repeatedly demonstrated he could actually care less about during his time as Secretary of Defense.
Well, turns out the Senate JUST FINISHED a kind of review of its own, specifically a review of that fabled time that we didn’t capture Bin Laden for some reason in Tora Bora when we probably could have. And guess what! Rumsfeld denied a request of ‘that nature’.
The report states categorically that bin Laden was hiding in Tora Bora when the U.S. had the means to mount a rapid assault with several thousand troops at least. It says that a review of existing literature, unclassified government records and interviews with central participants “removes any lingering doubts and makes it clear that Osama bin Laden was within our grasp at Tora Bora.”
On or about Dec. 16, 2001, bin Laden and bodyguards “walked unmolested out of Tora Bora and disappeared into Pakistan’s unregulated tribal area,” where he is still believed to be based, the report says.
Instead of a massive attack, fewer than 100 U.S. commandos, working with Afghan militias, tried to capitalize on air strikes and track down their prey.
“The vast array of American military power, from sniper teams to the most mobile divisions of the Marine Corps and the Army, was kept on the sidelines,” the report said.
At the time, Rumsfeld expressed concern that a large U.S. troop presence might fuel a backlash and he and some others said the evidence was not conclusive about bin Laden’s location.
I’ve been respectful of Obama’s decision not to drag Bush, Cheney, etc. through the mud and let the past be the past. But hey, if these guys want to duke it out in public? If they are asking to be shitted upon? Then let’s start eating some motherfucking PF Chang’s.
