If Democrats ignore health-care polls, midterms will be costly

This headline is saying nothing new. Over the past few months I’ve heard variations on this statement a hundred times over. What makes this article worth reading is that it was written by former pollsters for Carter and Clinton. By their figures, about 51% of American now trust the insurance companies over the government when it comes to managing our medical needs.

In my mind, this is astounding. It’s sad that conservitaves have gone to such lengths to promote distrust of our government for political gain. Especially when it results in people placing their trust in one of America’s most draconian industries.

A meat thermometer was plunged into the victim’s neck during a screening of ‘Shutter Island.’ An L.A. County sheriff’s spokesman called it a ‘vicious and cowardly attack.’

A dispute at a Lancaster movie theater during a screening of “Shutter Island” ended with someone plunging a meat thermometer into the neck of the man who complained about someone sitting near him talking on a cellphone during the show.

This is why we need to be allowed to carry guns in movie theaters NOW. If the man being stabbed with a meat thermometer had been packing heat, this would have never happened.

Confront your average American with the looniest, wingnut fanaticist and they’ll chalk it up to eccentricity—as long as it’s on the right. A white man flies a plane into building for a political objective and it’s not terrorism, it’s the act of a deranged lunatic.

Useful thought experiment: Switch the channel of that television to Olbermann and darken the skin color on the man seated. Tell me the photo doesn’t run in TIME Magazine. Tell me all the blather about “2nd Amendment rights” isn’t ignored in the court of public opinion. Tell me the man in the picture is not seen for the menacing threat he so obviously is.

But what if that black guy was watching Nights in Rodanthe? Then what?

I am 65 years old and I realize that the world is changing rapidly – much more rapidly than I would like it to. While I realize that the Post must report on these changes – even the ones with which I do not agree – I feel that the picture on Thursday morning was an affront to the majority of your readership. It is not something that I want coming into my home. And when you throw out all of the nonsense and contradictions, there’s nothing left except race. There’s no other way to explain why these people were silent and compliant for so long, and only decided to collectively freak out when this “foreign” and “exotic” president came along and, right out of the chute, passed the largest middle class tax cut in American history — something they would otherwise support, for goodness sake, it was $288 billion in tax cuts! — we’re left to deduce no other motive but the ugly one that lurks just beneath the pale flesh, the tri-corner hats and the dangly tea bag ornamentation. Irrespective of whether the president passed a huge tax cut or went out of his way to bring Republicans into the health care process, the seeds of racial animosity from the far-right were sewn during the campaign.
